Political leaders from several Latin American countries, among them Colombian Senator Piedad Cordoba, have created in Buenos Aires the group Latin Americans for Peace in Colombia to try "to humanize the conflict" in that country, according to information provided to EFE by supportive sources.
The group was formed during a meeting held on Sunday at the Communist Party of Argentina, attended by Córdoba, the leader of the organization Colombians for Peace; former Honduran Foreign Minister Patricia Rhodes; and Margarita Zapata, leader of the Mexican Emiliano Zapata Foundation.
The meeting was also attended by members of the Central American Parliament and the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front of El Salvador, among other organizations, said spokespersons of the Communist Party.
"The group appreciates the availability of insurgent forces like the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) for the opening of a political dialogue. The idea is to establish a dialogue between these forces and the Colombian government," pointed out the sources on the meeting led by Cordova, who had just returned to her country.
Meanwhile, members of Colombians for Peace will meet on Monday with the head of the Argentinean Cabinet, Aníbal Fernández, to inform on the objectives of the new group.
Córdoba expects to return to Buenos Aires in September, where she will possibly meet with the Secretary General of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), former Argentinean President Nestor Kirchner, added the spokespersons.
The Colombian senator contributed to the release, between 2008 and March, 2010, of over fifteen police officers, military men and politicians who were in the hands of the FARC.
Las week, as part of her efforts, Senator Córdoba confirmed that she will soon meet with Santos, whom she thanked for what she called a "gateway" to build "scenarios for peace."
