The Cuban government expressed on Thursday its “strongest condemnation” of “the coup d’etat taking place in Ecuador” and called upon the United States to condemn it, in order not to be “an accomplice”, according to a statement read by Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez in the presence of journalists.
“Cuba condemns and expresses its strongest condemnation of the coup d’etat now taking place in Ecuador”, said Rodríguez, and added that Havana “calls upon the US government” to condemn it; because otherwise it would be “an accomplice.”
The FM told the foreign press that he issued this declaration following direct “instructions” of Cuban President Raúl Castro.
• The government of the Republic of Cuba condemns and expresses its strongest condemnation of the coup d’etat taking place in Ecuador. President Correa has denounced that a coup d’etat is under way, that he has been attacked and that he’s being held by force at the Metropolitan Hospital of Quito’s police.
• Cuba expects the headquarters of the Ecuadorian Armed Forces to fulfill their duty of respecting the Constitution and ensuring that it’s upheld, and of guaranteeing the inviolability of the legitimately elect President of the Republic and democracy.
• We hold the chief of the Armed Forces of Ecuador responsible for the physical integrity and the life of President Correa. They must guarantee him full freedom of movement and the exercise of his duties.
• We strongly condemn the statements attributed to the so-called Patriotic Society of Lucio Gutiérrez which proclaims intentions that are overtly in favor of a coup.
• Cuba fully backs the legitimate and constitutional government of President Rafael Correa and supports the Ecuadorian people, which mobilized to rescue their president.
• Cuba joins the statements made by Latin American presidents and international organizations to demand the end of the attempt coup.
• I call upon the US government to declare itself to be against the coup d’etat. Its spokesman has only said that “it’s following the situation closely.” An omission in this regard would make it an accomplice of the coup attempt.
• Events like this one only serve interests alien to our region, which try to prevent the development of independent processes and processes of change.
• It’s also an attempt to silence the voice of Ecuador and of its President in their confrontation of the interventionist policy of the United States in the region.
• Destabilizing attempts like these only seek to take our region back to the times of coups d’etats, now by way of other formulas, to restore the domination of imperialism and oligarchies.
• Cuba warned, on the occasion of the coup d’etat organized in Honduras, with the participation of US circles of power, and later with the situation of impunity the coup perpetrators enjoy, that with these serious events a new era of coup d’états and military dictatorships in Latin America had reopened.
