The Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) expressed on Friday its strongest condemnation of the coup attempt against President Rafael Correa in Ecuador, and scheduled the visit to Quito of the Foreign Ministers of its member nations to express their support of the Ecuadorian President.
Met in Buenos Aires, the presidents of the countries that are members of UNASUR passed a declaration that “strongly condemns the coup attempt and subsequent kidnapping of Rafael Correa, and stresses the need for “the people responsible for the attempt coup to be tried and condemned.”
In addition, the South American bloc warned that their governments “will not tolerate and will condemn any new act of defiance of the institutional authority, and held that in case of “new breakdowns”, measures like the closing of borders, the suspension of trade and air traffic and energy supply will be adopted.
The meeting, also attended by the secretary general of UNASUR, was held in private, and besides reaching a consensus on a document that condemns the coup attempt, the heads of state went into detail about the possibility of traveling together to Quito to express their support of Correa and to celebrate the restoration of constitutional order.
