The essay La música nacional: identidad, mestizaje y migración en el Ecuador (National Music: Identity, mix and migration in Ecuador), written by the Ecuadorean researcher Ketty Wong Cruz, was considered a new and important contribution to the knowledge of the popular cultures in our continent. With this essay Wong won the XII Musicology Award of Casa de las Americas.
The jury, which was composed by Omar Corrado (Argentina), Mariantonia Palacio de Sans (Venezuela), Chalena Vásquez (Peru), Ana Victoria Casanova and Jesús Guanche (Cuba), gave a special mention to Argeliers León: acción y pensamiento, de la cubana Miriam Julieta Villa (Action and thinking of the Cuban Miriam Julieta Villa) and mentions to La danza habanera en México (1870-1920) (Havana dance in Mexico (1870 – 1920)), of the Mexican Joel Almazán and De los silencios de la escritura a voces de la nación: décima, opinión pública y música popular en Cuba (1895-1902) (From the silence of the writing to the voices of the nation: verse, public opinion and popular music in Cuba) by Jaddiel Díaz Frene.
