Raúl Castro: Our only alternative is to unite us
Cuban President Raul Castro has called for regional unity to face and defeat campaigns organized in the US against Latin American countries that push ahead processes of change.
In his address to the 9th Summit of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of our America (ALBA), the Cuban leader stressed last night that "our only alternative is to unite us, fight and triumph".
Cuba, Venezuela, Bolivia and Ecuador are the target of Washington aggressions, he denounced, adding that those countries face campaigns organized and financed by the US, local oligarchies and in some cases by the European Union.
Raul Castro recalled the recent coup in Honduras where the military overthrew the constitutional president Manuel Zelaya. The coup in Honduras was launched with the complicity and backing of imperialism and its mediatic instruments, he emphasized.
On the mediatic issue, he also referred to the media campaigns unleashed against Cuba for 49 years in the wake of the US-organized mercenary invasion of Bay of Pigs which was defeated in 72 hours on April 19, 1961.
US news agencies then spread lies on supposed successes of the invaders, that Fidel Castro had fled the country and about my arrest, he recalled. "They are doing the same now with other countries here present at this summit," he said.
The Cuban President congratulated Venezuelans for the Bicentennial of their independence, marked on Monday. He also highlighted the civil-military parade along Caracas' Paseo de los Proceres to conmemorate it.
