As a political analyst for television networks such as CNN in Spanish, Univision Radio and Univision TV, BBC and BBC World, CCTV, RT News, La Opinion California and Radio Miami, says it has changed the role of the media in the world.
“I have no doubt that the media issue has become a strategic factor of peoples. We have seen both processes conservative governments of left and right. And we are now living processes of deep reforms because citizenship requires participation and institutional tools to channel their expectations.
Besides that we must recognize that the media often respond to complex corporate and strategic business interests. So on that basis, private media have started a fight with governments and vice versa. We can see many examples in Mexico, Ecuador, Bolivia, Venezuela and Argentina , countries where there has been a new tension since we saw years ago and I say it is an obvious tension because it is a reflection of a political and ideological interest. “
– From your perspective, how this context affects the so-called unconventional war that not obvious to media institutions?
“In this sense we cannot be naive. There are now a subject of political struggle to advance government agendas and programmatic media hence is inserted the media issue .A traditional military coup does not work in most of the cases. But you can go using the media in favor of a coup process occurred in Chile of Salvador Allende. There also the military component, with the help of the media, as happens today, it will undermine and weaken the ideological, symbolic foundations of governments. And that’s a significant risk to democratic movements.
– In today’s age which gives importance to the symbolic?
“We are in a historical period characterized by a huge amount of information, especially in countries with technological development not only the United States and Europe but also in Latin America.
As there are so many sources now, I would say the reality is more fragmented. That is because the media reflect an apparent symbolic reality, which from my perspective living in another dimension and having other laws and rules.
Now is also produced another phenomenon that is overexposure to the coverage. You do not just as a professional journalist and media institutions we are saying that all citizens can invade cyberspace with thousands of photos, with tweets with blogs. This tendency sometimes affects electoral politics and the time it takes the low level of political commitment to participation.
Nowadays, every citizen can actually create their own personalized and slightly abstracted or isolated from society. A young man imbued with social networks Facebook, Twitter, blogs or pages that have to do with music and art she likes can become a more isolated than other beings. This phenomenon affects what is called atomized societies that it binds more information, persuasion is more difficult. For researchers and producers of media, from my point of view, that’s the big challenge. “
