Oil spill in Matanzas, western Cuba

According to local television, the protocols for such incidents were activated, including putting barriers in front of the coastal rocks where the escape took place.

The subdelegate of the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment in the territory, Nelvis Elaine Gómez Campo, explained they work to contain the crude oil and prevent it from reaching the sea.

The incident occurred when they were performing maintenance on one of the pumps in the well. The spill has not been contained yet, the source said.

On June 14, a breakdown in a tank that transported crude oil caused the spill of some 28 thousand liters of the hydrocarbon in the Horacio Rodríguez settlement, Limonar municipality, in Matanzas.
