First Indigenous Case of Zika Virus in Argentina

‘The infected is a woman, who had sexual contact with a man who was in Colombia’, explained the information official in Minuto Uno and infonews.

Francisco Fortuna said that this is the third case reported in Cordoba in 2016, although the other two are imported cases, because these people contracted the virus in another country.

According to the official report, the man remained a month in Colombia and in the last two days, before his return to Argentina, had symptoms, such as rash and fever.

The patient went to the doctor in Colombia, who diagnosed the presence of Zika virus, but laboratory tests to confirm it were not performed.

The woman had the symptoms and went to a provincial public hospital. The diagnosis was confirmed by the Central Laboratory of the Province.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than twenty countries and territories, mostly in Latin America, are areas at risk of infection by Zika virus.

This virus is transmitted by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, which also transmits dengue and chikungunya. The virus usually causes fever, red eyes, rash with white or red spots and, less frequently, muscle and joint pain.

WHO is also preparing a fourth document which will include everything that is known about the link between Zika virus with Guillain-Barre syndrome and the births of babies with microcephaly in cases where the virus affected the pregnant woman.
