Cuba develops contingency model to deal with recurrent drought

One of the essential objectives in its formulation is the conciliation with state agencies and the improvement of the early warning system, the minister explained when speaking at a meeting on the 2016 management results of the Environmental Agency (AMA by its Spanish acronym).

Pérez Montoya also gave strategic importance to the preservation and conservation of the environment, natural resources, human capital, as well as science and technological innovation in terms of socioeconomic development.

In 2016, 32 percent of the entire Cuban geographical area had deficits in rainfall, six percent were considered severely extreme, 11 percent were moderate and 15 percent were weak, according to statistics from the Climate Center.

Maritza García García, AMA president, told ACN that the main research projects for this year include the National Programs on Climate Change, Impacts, Mitigation and Adaptation, Biodiversity, Meteorology and Sustainable Development, among others.

CITMA was founded in 1995 and at least 20 works were presented in the assembly of representatives of its institutes: those of Meteorology, Oceanology, Ecology and Systematics, Tropical Geography and Geophysics and Astronomy, as well as the National Aquarium of Cuba and the National Museum of Natural History.
