Latin American Presidents Express Sorrow over Fidel Castro’s Death

Using his Twitter account, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said that he had spoke over the telephone with Cuban President Raul Castro and had expressed his solidarity with the people of this country, faced with the death of Commander Fidel Castro.

Maduro asserted in a series of messages that Fidel departed for immortality, and urged all revolutionaries in the world to continue his legacy and wave the banners of independence and socialism.

‘He made History, together with the Countries in the World to show a way of Dignity… Great History, with the principles of Bolivar and Marti…,’ said the Venezuelan head of State, who also highlighted part of the legacy of the Cuban leader to the Latin American and Caribbean countries.

Among Fidel’s main contributions to the region, Maduro mentioned the Bolivarian Alliance for the People of Our Americas and the mechanism for energy cooperation known as Petrocaribe.

Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa posted on Twitter: ‘A great man is gone. Fidel has died. Long Live Cuba! Long Live Latin America!’

Salvadorian President Salvador Sanchez Ceren said, also on his Twitter account: ‘With deep sorrow, we received the news of the death of the dear friend and eternal comrade, Commander Fidel Castro Ruz.’

‘Fidel will live forever in the hearts of the peoples fighting with solidarity for justice, dignity and fraternity,’ he added in another message.

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto said: ‘I m mourning the death of Fidel Castro Ruz, leader of the Cuban Revolution and emblematic reference of the 20th century.’

According to the Mexican president, Fidel Castro was a friend of Mexico, a promoter of bilateral relations based on respect, dialogue and solidarity.’

The historic leader of the Cuban Revolution died on Friday at 22:29 hours, local time, at the age of 90.
