US Lawyer Urges Obama to Release the Cuban Five

The main objective of these men was that of monitoring US-based groups that have carried out terrorist and criminal acts against Cuba and its people over the past 50years, said Schey, who is the executive director of the Center for Human and Constitutional Rights, based in L.A., California.

The lawyer said that during the trial held in Miami in 2001, military experts, including the current National Intelligence director James Clapper, testified that the five men did not represent any substantial threat to US national security.

Schey reiterated that the US President can allow the return to Cuba of Gerardo Hernandez, Rene Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez and Ramon Labañino, internationally know as the Cuban Five, and he noted that this would be an important step towards the normalization of diplomatic relations between the two nations, which were unilaterally broken by Washington I 1961.

Schey is one of the personalities who decided to send President Barack Obama his letter as part of  ongoing international actions each month in favor of the five Cuban heroes. The initiative is called every month by the International Committee for the Freedom of the Cuban Five.
