An accelerometer network to be installed in Santiago de Cuba

The Technical Deputy Director of CENAIS, Enrique Arango told ACN that the network of 50 accelerometers will generate the mapping of automatic jolts with the terrain’s accelerations in case of a strong earthquake.

This information is merged to the estimates of vulnerability of the buildings in each place allowing a rapid assessment of the sites with most damage while prioritizing the effects of the DC, said the specialist.

He added that the record of the strong earthquake will help validate the information of the accelerations of the terrain obtained by effective or historic research with which a norm for the construction of ant seismic buildings were conformed in Cuba in 1999 and the proposal of its validity, carried out in 2015.

The small terminals will send the information in real time to the central station by means of transmissions of information technology through GPRS/2G/3G cells, said the Doctor of Science.

They will be installed with a homogenous distribution of its distances in order to obtain a regular mapping system of the city of Santiago de Cuba with the highest seismic activity in the country, from 50 points that includes family doctors office, schools, hospitals and housing.

Arango pointed out that the network should begin its transmission in March.  They are already found in the Port of Mariel and was carried out route with specialists from Cubacel, Copextel and CENAIS to evaluate the quality of the information transfer and possible care in each place.

Others beside the 50 purchased with financing from the Alert Cities project and prepared before the seismic risk in the eastern region will allow the expansion of the equipment’s density in the selected area, he said.

Five accelerometers have been working in the CENAIS station since 2010 and four of the wide band seismic stations, also installed with Chinese technology in the area of Moa, Las Mercedes, Rio Carpintero and Maisi in the eastern part of the archipelago.

The scientist also explained while the equipment measures the acceleration of the terrain and its effectiveness is achieved before a strong earthquake, the seismic meters of the stations distributed throughout Cuba allows a permanent monitor of seismic activity in the country.
